Life Science is a dominant and growing industry in Boston with an aggressive lab development pipeline throughout different parts of the city. With the shift of labor moving north, Assembly Square in Somerville is the newest and fastest growing tech hub due to its proximity to existing institutions and facilities in Cambridge and Boston. The success of the transit-friendly retail and residential neighborhood in Assembly Row created by Federal Realty helped set the stage to transform the rest of the shuttered Assembly Square Mall into the next innovative campus. BioMed Realty’s Assembly Innovation Park is a 1.5 million SF life science development that will include: a trio of high-quality, LEED Gold lab buildings, a world-class urban greenspace, tailored amenities, and a robust lab infrastructure that will embrace a community of tomorrow’s leading innovators. The project will be completed in phases with the first phase delivering a twelve story, 500,000 SF lab building. Greystar will also be building their first Class-A life science office and lab building, and it is on track to be LEED Platinum and WELL certified with additional WiredScore and SmartScore certifications.
Sarah Forde with Federal Realty, Gary Kerr with Greystar Development and Colleen O’Connor with BioMed Realty joined us for a virtual presentation in January as they shared a deep dive into their projects, their plans to activate the Assembly Square streetscape, how Covid has impacted the retails at Assembly Row and their future.
