In a field that is oftentimes male dominated, CREW reminds me of attending Mount Holyoke: being surrounded by insightful and kickass women, and knowing you’ve got a support network. - Juliet Borja, PlaceTailor Elton Hampton Design

The two main reasons I joined CREW were to meet, share experiences with, and learn from other women. In addition to meeting fabulous people from architecture, etc., the bonus has been meeting and learning from women who are in the legal and finance fields.  Attend just one event hosted by any of the committees, be it a brown bag lunch with Housing and Community Development Committee or happy hour with the Development Project Management Group, and you will instantly get hooked.

As a woman of color, being part of CREW has been a great opportunity. It has allowed me to expand my knowledge to other areas of the multi-faceted commercial real estate, alongside strong women. - Carla Cabral, Massachusetts Housing Partnership (MHP)

I was pleased when my coworker and fellow CREW member, Nancy, sponsored my CREW membership. As a public non-profit affordable housing organization, one of MHP focus areas are homeownership and residential multifamily. As such, been part of CREW has provided me with additional prospects for professional and personal development. CREW is about networking, but above all is about people, their stories, motivations, and learning from each other!

This past year I was part of the CREW mentoring program. As a relatively younger member of CREW, I enjoyed getting to know and learn from not only my mentor, but also other mentees and mentors in the program. - Mary Patalita, Lincoln Property Company

With Covid upending the way we work and network, it was nice to connect with others virtually through the CREW mentor program. Adapting to the new normal, CREW reacted quickly to help its members stay connected while not physically being able to be together. Albeit an odd year to be a part of the mentor program, it turned out to be even more worthwhile than originally expected. Learning about different branches of the business within commercial real estate and how each segment was affected and then pivoted was helpful on both a personal and professional level.

Your Value in the Market: Strategies for Success in Negotiating Compensation

On May 13th Hillary Shine spoke to CREW Boston about understanding your value in the marketplace and how to negotiate your worth in both a current and new positions. Hillary set the stage by indicating that people are on the move and there is a real war on talent in the marketplace right now. The pandemic has certainly provided people the time and headspace to think hard about their current work environments and how for many this last year has allowed them the opportunity to see the benefit of a hybrid work from home/office lifestyle. Shine stressed the importance of truly understanding your value by looking carefully at your entire compensation package not simply what shows on your W2 when evaluating and placing a value to your net worth.

On May 19th we hosted deeper dive into the conversations we’ve had in the past, focused on how stakeholders, real estate professionals, and community development partners understand wealth creation and economic development in the City of Boston. Our panelists consisted of city agents, developers, and neighborhood activists, and the conversation focused upon wealth and equity-building in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston as well as the current revitalization efforts in Nubian Square (formerly Dudley Square.) Roxbury has long been home to activists, civil rights leaders, artists and musicians; Nubian Square is the geographic heart of the city and is intrinsic to the health and well-being of Boston as a whole.
