    rexBoston: Driving Resiliency, Leveraging Investment & Showcasing Innovation

    On April 5th, the CREW Boston Sustainability Group hosted a presentation led by CREWBoston member Ellen Watts, and her Architerra colleague, Anna Arscott, to introduce rexBoston, Driving Resiliency, Leveraging Investment & Showcasing Innovation.  rexBoston – resiliency exemplified – is a bold vision to catalyze 130 innovative current and potential projects throughout the City, accelerating climate adaptation and carbon neutrality and showcasing replicable solutions in an international resiliency exposition opening in 2020 and culminating in 2030.  Inspired by CREW Boston members’ visits to Hamburg and Copenhagen, rexBoston embraces climate action as an opportunity for growth in support of the City’s Imagine Boston 2030, Climate Ready Boston, Go Boston, and Resilient Boston goals.

    How Innovation in Transportation is Disrupting Real Estate Development, Planning and Design

    Transportation specialists on a panel discussion on “How Innovation in Transportation Is Disrupting Real Estate Development, Planning and Design” were generally in favor of more BRT, or bus rapid transit, and were not so enthused over the idea of a gondola to get people from South Station to the eastern edge of the Seaport District.​On the panel at a well-attended CREW Boston March lunch at the Hyatt Regency Boston Hotel, moderated by CREWBoston President Lisa Serafin, Principal at the real estate firm Redgate, the three panelists agreed that the economic health of the region depends on continue investment in transportation and that some commitments need to be made in the near future.

    Power Purchase Agreements – An Aggregation Model

    Members heard from Pam Messenger with Friends of Post Office Square about the alliance formed in 2016 between Friends of Post Office Square, MIT and Boston Medical Center (BMC)  to buy electricity from a large new solar power installation, adding carbon-free energy to the grid and demonstrating a partnership model for other organizations in climate-change mitigation efforts.  Their 25-year Power Purchase Agreement enabled the construction of Summit Farms, a roughly 650-acre, 60-megawatt solar farm in North Carolina, the largest renewable-energy project ever built in the U.S. through an alliance of diverse buyers.  Summit Farms has been operating for a year.

    Discussion with MassDevelopment President & CEO Lauren Liss

    In February, the CREW Boston Public Strategies Committee met MassDevelopment President and CEO Lauren Liss during the first lunch edition of the committee’s speaker series. Lauren, who joined the Agency in September 2017, discussed her experience in the public and private sector, as she served as Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner and as a partner at Rubin and Rudman. Lauren also detailed MassDevelopment’s various finance and development initiatives.

    2018 Mentor Program Kick-Off Luncheon

    The Mentor Program had a very successful kick off lunch at KeyBank Real Estate Capital.  This year’s Program is comprised of 50 members, including Peer to Peer and Mentee to Mentor pairs. Hayley Suminski and Joanna Murray, co-chairs of the Mentor Program, kicked off the lunch by welcoming the pairs and asking everyone to introduce themselves to the group. After introductions and learning about suggestions for a successful experience, the mentors and mentees broke out into pairs to formalize their match and discuss logistics, as well as, what the mentees are looking to accomplish to begin a productive and rewarding mentorship relationship.

    We had a packed room for our Entrepreneur Exchange meeting in January. Advisors from MSW Financial Partners, Penret Services, Inc., and OneDigital Health & Benefits joined us for a comprehensive benefits refresher covering pension benefits -- Profit Sharing, Cash Balance Plans -- company and personal insurances, and planning options available to our members' smaller, closely held businesses. What could have been an overwhelming 90 minutes of confusing acronyms and jargon was actually a very interactive discussion among our members and the speakers.

    Holiday Gift & Crafting Party to benefit the Carolina Hill Shelter

    On December 12th, more than 35 CREW Boston members participated in the Holiday Gift and Craft Party to benefit Carolina Hill Shelter.  CREW members purchased gifts for 17 families residing at Carolina Hill, who without CREW’s assistance would not have received gifts this holiday season.  This year, CREW members also crafted hand-made ornaments for the families.  The outpouring of CREW’s generosity was overwhelming and truly appreciated by Carolina Hill.  The Holiday Gift and Craft Party, hosted by the Community Involvement Committee, also provided a great networking opportunity to socialize with other CREW members, as well as enjoy pizza and wine.

    Development Project Management Group Kick-Off Reception

    The CREW Development Project Management Group hosted a successful kickoff event on December 4. Nearly 40 women attended the event and enjoyed drinks, snacks and networking. The group co-chairs gave a brief overview of the genesis of the group, its goals, and what members can expect for future programming. Members participated in a icebreaker to introduce themselves and something they are working on in their personal or professional life. Feedback about the group was extremely positive and the members in attendance indicated a strong desire for a group to fill this niche within the CREW offering. Many members provided suggestions for future programming. The next event is expected to be scheduled in early 2018.

  • 5th Annual Holiday Shop for a Cause

    5th Annual Holiday Shop for a Cause

    On November 30th, the CREW Boston Community Involvement Committee (CIC) hosted the fifth annual Holiday Shop for a Cause event to benefit the Elizabeth Stone House (ESH), an organization that serves homeless and at-risk families and individuals who have experienced domestic violence, substance abuse, and mental illness. CREW attendees and their guests enjoyed delicious appetizers and drinks while shopping the wares of vendors with a treasure trove of goods for the mind, body and soul, including unique jewelry, handmade knits, delicious treats and art!  Most importantly, the event raised $1,800 for ESH, which will be used for ESH’s summer camp program for the children they served.
