    Public Strategies Breakfast: Big Challenges, Big Ideas For the Boston Region

    The CREW Boston Public Strategies Committee (PSC) held its first breakfast panel of the year, focusing on strategies to address the region's growing transportation challenges.  The PSC welcomed Jessica Robertson, a senior planner with Utile, who introduced recent research and planning related to the region's transportation infrastructure with an emphasis on new initiatives; Alice Brown, Project Manager at the Boston Transportation Department, who discussed the City of Boston's citywide initiative to connect resident population centers with employment centers in the City of Boston; and Mary Skelton Roberts, Senior Program Officer for Climate at the Barr Foundation who discussed the Barr Foundations work and its emphasis on the need for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT).

  • Holiday Shop for a Cause

    Holiday Shop for a Cause

    At the annual Holiday Shop for a Cause event to benefit the Elizabeth Stone House (ESH) approximately 100 attendees shopped the wares of 12 vendors with a treasure trove of goods for the mind, body and soul, including handcrafted jewelry, locally-roasted coffee, handbags, wine totes and even organic lavender products!  Most importantly, the event raised approximately $2,400 for ESH, which will be used for camperships for the children served by ESH.

    On November 17, CREW Boston members spoke to students from Babson College’s Real Estate Association. The panelists discussed their education, career development, and current position within the commercial real estate industry. Areas of commercial real estate that were discussed include development, finance, management, and brokerage. Students were also encouraged to apply for the CREW Boston scholarship.

    November Luncheon: Malls 2.0: The next step in retail evolution

    At November CREW Boston Lunchceon at the Hyatt Regency Boston, Kaminkow said retail is being built by both the old, bricks, and the new, clicks. But the big difference on the bricks side is that, with the universal availability of shopping by click, it now has to be not just a place to look and buy – but an experience. The dying old mall is being reinvented, she said, as a platform in the new age of superabundance, for the sophisticated consumer, based on research into how she/he shops.

    Meds & Eds Networking Group Breakfast

    On Tuesday, November 10, Bob Biggio, Vice President of Facilities at Boston Medical Center, addressed the Meds & Eds Networking Group at Payette’s offices. Bob gave an overview of BMC’s $300M project to renovate their main Albany Street campus in Boston. He talked about how the changing healthcare climate and BMC’s financial challenges led to a new approach to physical space. The hospital is now viewed as a model for future hospital turnarounds in the U.S.  The topic generated lots of questions and a great discussion.

    Professional Development Seminar: Finance 101 - For the Commercial Real Estate Professional

    During the Commercial Real Estate Finance 101 Professional Development Seminar in November, Tod McGrath a Lecturer in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP) at MIT and President of advisoRE, LLC walked attendees through financial jargon to help them better understand key terms used in today’s commercial real estate world. Seminar participants learned, among other topics, the meaning and calculation of present value and net present value, how to determine if cap rate is important, the definition of NOI (Net Operating Income), and the applicability of all these concepts to the buying and selling of assets.

    On Wednesday, October 28th CREW Boston members and guests painted, networked and laughed at The Paint Bar on Newbury Street.  Our painters created their own unique masterpieces on canvas tote bags.  The scene was a “Starry Night Over Boston”, which included a depiction of Boston’s iconic skyline.

    Public Strategies October Monthly Meeting

    The CREW Boston Public Strategies Committee (PSC) held its monthly breakfast meeting on Wednesday, October 21 and committee members were treated to an “insider view” of the development of the new Boston Public Market.  Situated on the Rose Kennedy Greenway and on the ground floor of MassDOT’s Parcel 7 facility, the Boston Public Market is highly accessible by foot or transit with the Haymarket T station within the existing building. Presented by CREW-Boston and PSC members Kate Mora and Caitlin Gilman of Architerra and Amy Prange of Colliers.
